switching to external moniter with a smashed laptop screen

So yesterday my dell m1210 took a dive and the lcd is completely smashed. I have a lot of important info on the computer that I need to access. The rest of the computer seems to be working fine. I plugged it into my tv via vga and the initial dell screen loaded then windows loaded but then the picture cut out on my tv, however it always cuts out at that point until I log into windows go into prefences and switch the primary monitor over to my tv. But since the lcd is smashed I cant see to navigate through anything, I cant even login to windows. I really need help here...Is there possibly a way to bypass logging into windows and somehow get the computer running to the tv? Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Holding down the "Fn" key (function key), usually next to the windows key on the left side, find the key somewhere that has a little monitor icon on it. It's usually one of the number keys or F keys at the top, but it varies from laptop to laptop. That should let you toggle displays.
