Is there a way to keep someone from logging on to
a Win '98 computer? Every time the cleaning crew comes
in someone uses a computer that has win '98. I know
how to add a password for the screen saver, but
was hoping to stop them from booting this
machine. They have keys to all offices, so that's not
much of an option.

n the Bios you should find an option to setup the system security.
It will / should stop the system from booting up unless the password is entered.

Assuming you shut down the systems at night.

If you leave them running at night a simple screen saver with the password enabled should stop them
from gaining access.
To prohibit them from bypassing the screen saver using a simple reboot.
Enable both system password and screen saver password

If you do shut the machine(s) down at night, and it sounds like you do, you can remove the power cord(s) to a locked drawer or file cabinet, computers don't run too well without electricity. The keylock might be an option, if you have keylocks on the machines, and keys to use on them, that's one of the things they're for. If the machines are shut down at night BIOS passwords would be the easiest way to go, just make sure you don't use easy passwords like your dog's name...use an 8 or more character password consisting of both numbers AND letters. Make sure you write it down and put it in a safe place, like a locked file cabinet, in case you forget it.

You can also check a few of the download sites, programs are available that offer better password protection than win98 does. SimTel (http://www.simtel.net/) has a good list of shareweare/freeware.

Just beaware there are lots of backdoor passwords for BIOS so dont think you can totally relax that you are secure.

But the more protection you give it the better.
