I am presently using AT&T cable internet but want to switch to Qwest DSL. They have sent me the new modem but when I went to plug in the modem to the back of my computer, I didn't have a usb port. When I started up with AT&T they came out and I thot they were installing a usb port but when I disconnected them it was a telephone connection not a port for usb. Everyone tells me I have usb port and the software seems to be in the driver properties, what do I need? Is there a adapter or do I need to install a card of some kind?
thanks for your time

As long as you have the port installed and setup, which it sounds like you do as you can see them.

Install the software, then once installed plug in the USB cable (this can be done will the machine is switched on)

Must be using Windows 98/SE/ME/2000
Windows will detect and start to install drivers,

Hi Cheryl,
I may have misread your original post, but it seems that what you've said is that you don't have a USB port in the back or front (some newer models have ports on the front, I'm told) of your system. Indeed, if you have at least Windows 98 SE (I think) or newer and a relatively new Motherboard, USB support is on/in your system. You of course still need the actual port. It may be that a certain adapter would be attachable to a certain jumper on your mother board, but if I were you I'd just purchase a PCI card with a couple USB ports on it. Install that piece of hardware and let "plug and play" do it's wonders. No open PCI, slots? Then back to the jumper on the mobo. Make sense? Post back. Lot's of smart people on this forum, and unlike me, they may have good/experiential advice.

Thank you all for your response, problem is solved. The "friend" who built my computer had the port covered, I eventually fiquered it out and now all is working perfect. Thank You again.
