Perhaps the title alone made you chuckle, perhaps I deserve it. :D

If you'll forgive my asking, I am wondering what computer expertise/talent/certification/etc. I might consider pursuing in order to find employment in the future. What are the most promising or consistent areas of expertise in terms of finding work in the computer field?

I know this isn't a jobs wanted forum, and I hope this sort of post is allowed.

I am not an expert in any computer field, I would be beginning from the bottom. I'm wondering if there is something I could study and perhaps take classes for that you guys think would think a good idea. Something I might get good at after, say, a couple years of study. A talent that would basically allow me entry into the paying computer world.

I know the internet is full of such information, but there is SO very much that is a bit overwhelming, as every sight claims a particular certification or another is the way to go. I'm hoping I might borrow your expertise just to get some ideas.

Thanks for any replies and again I hope this sort of question is allowed and not terribly annoying. :)

Usually the best place to start is getting your A+ certification. It is a basic computer cert and is pretty much needed for many companies to even talk to you. If you are good at self learning then get a study guide and you can take the two part exam ($150 each exam last I looked) when you are ready. If you are not good at self learning there are usually classes at your local community or technical college.

Once you have the A+ you will likely have a better idea of what particular areas you like and can start heading in that direction.

Other basic certs are Net+ and Security+. Usually they are taken in that order after A+.

Either way get your feet wet first. There are sooooooo many ways to go that you don't want to commit yourself to something because it seems like the best money maker, only to find you hate it.

If you specialize in Cisco, security, or software development then you will have to spend far less time dealing with stupid users. Specialize in Microsoft and you will get to spend your whole career fixing spyware infections because someone clicked on a link in an email from someone named "me".

Well said!

Though stupid people pay me good money to fix their systems. Yeah that porn site might say FREE FREE FREE!!! but you have to pay me cash to fix it after it destroyed your system. :D
