is there some site that tells me step by step how to setup a small network (2 PCs) so i can transfer files?

i succesfully setup one before but i recently tried setting it up again following the same procedures and was unsuccesful. the weird thing was that i could sometimes see the other my pc through my sisters but then when i try to connect to see the mapped drives i get an error. then after that the pc just disappears (also for some reason when i check the network properties on my sisters pc, my computers network properties show up instead - bizarre)

ok, im running both win98se on both systems and i'm using a crossover cable, with a 3com(mine) and nd(sisters) network cards. i first added the netbeui, tcpip, and the ipx/spx, also i made netbeui the default protocol. i setup the file and printer sharing along with the mapped drives making sure to make it shared as/full/with a password. i also used client for microsoft networks as my primary. i am using a unique pc name and made sure to use a proper workgroup name for both PCs. then i set the access control to "shared". i verified both pcs had the correct info and still had no luck.

can someone help me out? purty please with sugar coated candy canes on top.

i forgot to mention that i tried to go into add/remove programs settings and add/delete all the communications software. but i still had no luck. i even experimented using only several ones.

which of these do i really need to just transfer files?

First remove TCP/IP and IPX/SPX from your network. You really only need Netbeui in your case and the other protocols will only slow down communications. ( the computer will try to 'talk' will all three protocols. YIKES!!!)Next make sure the LAN cards are setup the same. (IE: 100Mb or 10Mb) hopefully they're autosensing and you won't need to configure them.

Make sure that the workgroup name is the same for both computers and keep all names, computer and workgroup,to less then 14 letters. ( I would retype that information just to rule out typos and added spaces.)

Start both computers , wait 15 mins and then try typing "\\computername" ( replace computername with the actual name of the other computer) in the "run" box. Any Errors?

Follow this steps to use "net Diag" on a windows 9X computer. ( make sure all computers are running the same protocols. In your case that should be netbeui.)

On one computer, click Start, point to Programs, and then click MS- DOS
Prompt.

At the command prompt, type "net diag" and press "ENTER". NET DIAG searches for a diagnostics server and should display the following prompt:

"No diagnostic servers were found on the network. Is Microsoft Network
Diagnostics currently running on any other computers on the network?"

Press N (for No). This causes the computer from which you are running NET DIAG to be a diagnostic server until you press a key.

On the other computer, click Start, point to Programs, and then click MS-DOS Prompt.

At the command prompt, type "net diag" and press "ENTER". If a NetBIOS-capable protocol (such as NetBEUI or TCP/IP) and IPX/SPX are both installed, you receive the following prompt:

"IPX and NetBIOS have been detected. Press I to use IPX for diagnostics, N
to use NetBIOS, or E to exit this program."

Press I (for IPX) or N (for NetBIOS) to test the network connection using that particular protocol. If you are unable to communicate with the diagnostic server using the protocol you chose, run NET DIAG again, but this time reverse the role of each computer.

If this fails both ways then uninstall and reinstall the network drivers. (IE: lan card drivers, network prototcols and "client for...." software) and try again. If it still fails to work then your cable or lan card is proably the problem and not the network setup of either computer.

If it works, but you still can't access the other computer then remove all security settings from both computers, reboot and try again. (IE: set the computer up for "share-level" security not "user-level".)

Good luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks for that walkthrough GH http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif I copy and pasted that puppy to Word Doc for future ref. (if you don't mind). I had a LAN here at work that I just disengaged...(not happy with it). I was using TCP/IP maybe I'll try again with Netbeui http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
