View Full Version : Ran out of IDE space and Power

So, I am building up this computer and I can't figure out how to get the internal zip drive working. I have the floppy, Master and Slave hard drives on IDE1, CDROM and CDburner on IDE2. I am using an ABIT BX-133 motherboard. It has 2 U-ATA slots and I was able to get the boot drive to work off it, but then it did not see the CDROM/RW. Is there a protocol to using the U-ATA? What would you suggest?
My other problem is that I have a 200W power supply that is pooping out on me with all the periferals attached. Easy problem right? Well, I bought a new ATX PS but even though my current PS says ATX on the side, it is smaller than the one I bought. I am using a Gateway tower from ~1998. It has rounded sides, so it is skinnier at the top and bottom, kind of like the hull of a sailboat. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif Anywho, does anyone know how to find a supply that would fit?
Thanks
Ed

Put the boot drive on the UATA primary as master, the second HD on the
UATA secondary as master, the CD-RW on IDE 1 as master, and the CD-ROM
on IDE 2 as master. Put the Zip on IDE 1 or 2 as slave.
You may have to load drivers or make BIOS setup changes to enable all four channels.

tjaymadison;
Does my HDD slave need to be UATA compatible? It is a Western Digital Caviar 30200 2G.

Not if the manual or motherboard specs say that the channels are backward compatible.
I would not have any HD's as slaves with that many channels, if I were you.

Really sorry gents but I've lost the plot somewhere.
I thought you only had 2 IDEs allowing four connections, whats with these extra U-ATA connections or is this another word for SCSI, I know you can get UDMA but this uses up one of your IDE's.
Confused - I thought if you had 2 x HDDs and 2 x CD then that was your lot unless you got SCSI.
Please help unconfuse me someone.

i am quite sure that ide is the interface, and ata is the protocol. they work together and are essentially one in the same when refering one another. i also think that you can get an additional ide controller card to put in an expansion slot if you have a need for more than 4 ide devices.

Some of the newer MOBO's come with an additional IDE controller that is usually ATA-100 compatible and can be used as a RAID controller. Same as adding a card but it is already provided on-board.
Also the slowest drive on the channel (in most cases0 is the limiting factor as to how fast the channel will run at..if you have an ATA-33 and an ATA-100 on the same channel most often it will run at 33.
