I have a cable modem, therefore obviously there is no telephone number for that line.

Is there anyway I can do a direct dial connection from another computer,

Work computer NT4 ISDN with a telephone line.
Home computer Glorious Win ME and cable Modem (NTL).

Any help greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure what your trying to do... I do know that Dialup Server is an option in win98se/me. You could try messing around with it. To set up a Dial-Up Networking server:

Double-click My Computer, and then double-click Dial-Up Networking to start Dial-Up Networking.
Click Connections and then click Dial-Up Server.
Click Allow caller access to enable others to connect to your computer.
Click Server Type and then choose a server type from the Type of Dial-Up Server list.

I do see PPP internet server as an option, so I guess you could share internet via dialup. It also offers Default (dunno maybe your default settings for your network such as file and print sharing, don't know though!)and Windows for Work Groups..Thats just in case windows 3.11 or Win NT 3.1 users want access. Try this out and mess with it! I'd like to know how it turns out and if you can use it for what you want.

Dial-Up Networking and Dial-Up Server must be installed on your computer before you can set up a Dial-Up Networking server. To install click start-> settings -> Control Panel then double click add/Remove software then click windows setup tab then double click communications and select dialup server. Hope this helps!

Hey skhips,
If you don't already have one, you could install a regular modem, hook up your phone line.
Are you trying to dial into your home computer?

Cable phone??? How interesting. Would one still have a number to dial to reach you?
This is not the right place to get into that, but I would be interested in hearing more about a cable phone. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
Back on topic, concept is concept. If someone with a regular phone dials a number to reach you then, when you set up your dialup server, you direct it to that modem for incoming source.
Just like with normal phoneline modems, If you can't use your internet connection modem to dial in or out, then you would need two modems.
If this is an "Always on" connection, then you might consider PPP or even PPTP, both of which work with ME. If your not sure about these, you can read more on your system "help" http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

they would be dialing your IP#, not your phone #......

or am I missing something here??

(well, not 'dialing'- but 'calling/logging' in.)
then are we talking about an FTP server, or a remote access .......

You can set up a RAS, (remote access server)where you would actualy dial a phone number with the "client" to access the server. PC Anywhere is handy for this, but I am not sure of all the details of it.
SK: you might have better luck looking in MS KB. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif
Tried to post a link, but it wouldn't go, sorry.

Sea is correct. If the server at home is using a cable modem and the connection is always on. Then you would access this computer over the web by it's IP address. Other computers would first establish an internet connection using whatever means (ISDN in your case), then connect to the server over the internet.

You can of course setup a RAS server by installing a regular modem and RAS sofware. In which case other computers ( which also have regular modems) would dial the server's number and establish a connection that way.

Hope this helps http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Have you thought about setting about a ftp server? The software is inexpensive or free.
