What's the best setup, with 2 IDE channels only for the following (in W2K):
1. ATA100 Hard drive
2. Zip drive (250)
3. DVD drive
4. CDRW drive
A. One of my computers came with 1 & 2 on the primary channel, and 3 & 4 on the secondary.
B. But Micron set up my other computer with 1 & 3 on the primary and 2 & 4 on the secondary.
In configuration A, the zip drive goes to PIO only (Iomega says that's the deal for zip drives with ATA100 cable). The other 3 drives are Ultra-DMA.
In configuration B, all drives are Ultra DMA-enabled.
Any recommendations?
Thanks.

I would have my hdd primary master, zip primary slave, dvd secondary master and cdrw secondary slave. I am quite sure that your bootable drive has to be primary master anyway, and if your zip drive has to be on the primary channel, I guess that takes care of that. As far as your secondary goes, you can probably swap them and see which works better.

I personally have a setup like configuration A. Everything runs optimal according to Sandra 2001. Primary Master should be the hard drive, Zip as Primary Slave, DVD Secondary Master, CDRW as Secondary Slave.

Assumptions:
Your mobo is fairly new and supports device independent timing on the IDE channels
My recommendations:
IDE Primary
• Master -- HD
• Slave -- Zip
IDE Secondary
• Master -- CD-RW
• Slave -- DVD
Reasons:
1. Zip will not run at ATA speed(s) regardless of its position
2. Burns will be successful more often when made from a hard drive image
3. Many RW conflicts are avoided when it is configured as master
