I know that originally Microsoft said you could make back-up copies of your original Windows (95 & 98) CD's, but I cannot get my burn to copy them.
I have used "CD-Clone" and "BurnDrive", but have no usable copies. What do the rest of you use to make backup copies of Windows???

Best I can tell you is to check with tech support for the software vendors, they woul dprobably have a better idea than we would why your copies won't work.

Do you get any error messages during the burn -- buffer under-runs, etc?
Which burn method -- disk, track, etc?

Hello j,
I think Pete might have a problem if I tell you how to make copies of CD's, so unfortunately Im not going to be able to get into any of that, but this one is a bit odd so I will offer this little bit of info. (If you dont think this is appropriate Pete Delete away)
Generally MS Software is "Extremely Easy" to back-up.....
If you are having a problem making a "legal" back-up of Windows, I would suspect that you are experiencing some type of hardware problem or problem with your CD's themselves........(Posibly your original CD is damaged?)
CloneCD should be able to back-up that disk with no problems at all.....
Follow the instructions for making and recording a disk image....
There is also the posibility that if you are trying to use CDR Software that is "Not Properly Registered", some of these programs have built in protections that will intentionally burn CD's that will not function correctly.
If you have a known good, legal, original Windows CD, and are using legitimate registered software to make your back-ups, there should be no problems.
I would compare the above statement to your current situation, and then start looking at potential hardware/media problems to solve this issue, if that statement applies to you.
Good Luck!

Can't really do anything but agree with Aware...they SHOULD work...I used NTI CD-Maker for 98 and it worked fine...so it could be a burner error of some kind...

I have "NTI CD-Maker 2000" Software (registered), a legal copy of Win'98 (also registered) and a Samsung 8x8x32 Burner.
Honestly, I have used this copy of Win'98 for several years, so I would like to have a spare copy just in case.
I usually get a "illegal error" message when burning a copy. It always says that it "needs to copy at a slower speed", but "2x" Speed does not work either. I am stumped.

OK, so some of our newer participants will know, the "problem" I have with topics of this type is copyright issues. I'm sure it's entirely possible that in most cases, it's a simple and straightforward situation where the person is just trying to make a backup copy for emergencies, such as if the original CD was left in a car during summer and warped...
However...
How do we know this? How do we have any assurance it's not someone trying to make 100 copies to sell at a flea market or something of that nature, or multiple copies to give to friends? We don't.
That's the reason I usually shy away from helping people make copies of registered software. It's usually acceptible to make ONE backup copy for your own use, and is actually a good idea. Make a backup, use it instead of the original, and store the original in a safe place. But since this is the internet, we have no way of knowing if any individual is actually on the level. (No accusations intended, j-sanborn)
That's why I'm so picky about the questions about copying software. We have no way of knowing if we're not actually helping someone pirate multiple copies of the OS...so I figure it's best to leave it alone.

You have a very valid point.
I respect that kind of thinking because I myself would not want to be taken in by someone selling illegal copies of licensed software on Ebay or somewhere else.
I appreciate the efforts, anyway.
