View Full Version : Get my site to show in search engines?

One of the folks here at work is designing a web site for our plant...to show off a little, but the end goal is to achieve some sort of networking with other wastewater treatment plants that treat a flow similar to ours. Now I have no desire, currently, to learn about HTML or web design, I would like to know if anyone has gone through getting your site listed with varying search engines? Is there way to do it cost-free?
He is using Netscape to compose the site and CuteFTP to upload it to our ISP (with the free 10MB web page allotment). Of course, I like Google...I did a quick search on Google, but I really don't even know what this action is called?? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/confused.gif
I think it may even be viewable (it's just the main page with pic of part of the plant) now if you are interested http://www.apex.net/users/hwuswtp
Thanks for suggestions http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Try the keywords Website Submission (http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&q=Website+submission).
Plenty free ones out there...

Free Submission is a good one. Easy to use etc. It,s freeware (obviously) I,ve tried several. BUT I advise that you have a look at users comments before you download, as its reported that some leave 'undesirables' on your machine.
Submit Wolf is a good one, but the trial version is limited to about 6 engines, unless you want to part with some cash.

bassvax: Fussy old lady who works with pics saying this, but you might crop that pic just a wee bit to get rid of "odd" at top and left borders and to uncover the "y". Nice pic, by the way.

Cool suggestions Kay, Sea & Vic...I will pass them along to the 'web master' or as he likes to call it 'web slave'. I am not getting involved in this one except to offer suggestions and such. The site has been updated several times just today. I think he put our pictures on there. He's just beginning so things will change constantly for a while. This is his first major endeavor into site design so check in on it later.
Thanks for the links to some good submission and hosting... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
Edit: Sea that would have been a good one about the outhouse, but that was the wrong end of the plant...that was the clean water leaving to go to some cooling towers and then back into the Green River. The building was actually the effluent pump house control with some emergency chemical feed setups http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

If you are interested in adding you url manually to search engines, here is a list of sites that you can add your site to. Please remember to add meta tags, comments, and summaries to tables. This will help with your ranking. Another thing I found is to complete all of the form information and thank them for submitting your site.

Hey, bassvax, which one are you? I have eliminated Roscoe from the running. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
Here again..fussy comment. I have an old ISP connection running at the 26 bps and using an old slow puter with a 400 chip...but the page with the staff took over five minutes to load. Might need to downsize slightly? Don't know how many other old, slow peoples are still out there.

Thanks Diz for that massive list http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Kay, I have mentioned to the fellow about load times for that page...anyone with suggestions? He mentioned something about compressing the pics or something like that...working on it. Now Kay, half of the fun is the detective work...(hint: read the job descriptions again http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif )
Several updates made today...corrected some data and misspellings, a tour and the message board http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
http://www2.apex.net/users/hwuswtp
And one more question...which one of you folks is gonna educate me on how to change the appearance of my link so that it reads something other than the actual boring url? I've checked the small ubb guide and the web.

Hmmm...I thought the UBB link had a pretty good explanation but here's a quick how-to:
[ url=http://www .apex.net/users/hwuswtp]Link Name[/url]
I put a space after the first bracket and a space after the www so it won't show up here as a link. Simply remove that space, and it's a named link, and of course, you have to add your spiffy link name...and it comes out like this:
Waste Water Plant (http://www.apex.net/users/hwuswtp)

Hi,
To change a link to read as a word instead of the whole url is like this: <a href="http://www.yoursite.com>Add your text here</a>
To use a image like a button for a link is like this: <a href="http://www.yoursite.com><img src="youimage.gif" border="0"></a>
These examples is for a website, not in this forum.

Thanks again folks. Have I mentioned the missing cog in this cranium of mine lately? Pete, you are, as always, absolutely correct sir http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Flush 'N' Forget
FE Stokes WWTP (http://www2.apex.net/users/hwuswtp)
So the missing cog explains your pic...the somewhat vacant stare, the smoke ouring fom your ears... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Anyway the idea of making the pictures fater to oad by compressing them is basically sounnd...if you have access to a good photo editor it should be pretty easy to do...just reduce the quality level somewhat...and for most surfers the loss in quality wouldn't matter......
