Laptop hangs on using keypad/touchpad

hI,

I'm using an IBM Thinkpad (R60). My laptop hangs after using the keypad/touchpad for a few seconds/minutes .. It works though when I use an external keyboard/mouse. Could you suggest where the problem may lie and how do I correct it?
