I just ordered a 60GB hard drive, Maxtor 7200rpm UATA 100, along with a PCI Controller, also Ultra 100. Plan on installing Win 2k on it, along with Office 2k Pro. Any recommendations on partitioning the drive? If I'm not mistaken it's not too big of a deal if I don't setup all the partitions right away because you can do it within 2k as long as the file system is NTFS right?..
Any opinions would kick some serious butt on this..

I would think it over carefully, planout your partition strategy and do it from the start, rather than taking a chance on damaging data later by tinkering with partitions.
IMHO stick with smaller and more manageable partitions. I prefer 10GB or less each, that makes defrag and scandisk much less time consuming. It also gives you designated file storage areas, so if anything goes wrong with the OS, chances are the storage area will still be OK.
If you plan to network the machine, and possibly use it for file storage at least one FAT partition might be a good idea. Also for gaming, etc, sometimes a FAT partition might be helpful, I'm not sure how most games react to NTFS except that games specifically written for NT/win2000 should have no problem with it. If you want to go with NTFS all the way, that's fine too, as long as other win95/98/ME machines don't have to retrieve files from it, they can't read the NTFS file system. And of course make sure all software is win2000 compatible...

Should you not follow Paleo's fine advice, I believe Partition Magic can resize your partitions without deleting all your data (althought they will strongly insist with the standard "back everything up!").
Just another suggestion; install your 7200rpm drive with open bays around it if possible and keep your cables nice and tied off. The 7200rpm drives can generate significantly more heat than the 5400rpm drives and slower.

Thanx alot guys.. I knew I'd get some true brain-activity from this board, always come here for the good stuff..
Never used Partition Magic before, but as far as messing with the partitions other than the OS drive, I should be ok just using Win 2K's built in features right?
I spose dual booting the system wouldn't be a bad idea either considering I do run quite a few DOS games..would it be smarter to just make my old drive FAT32, and can I install windows on that drive?
