View Full Version : A Server 2003 and client pc Q
Im having a problem getting a Client pc to connect to my window server 2003. I did a few others that went through fine but this one is giving me trouble. In the internet connections it shows a Connect to Server connection. Upon opening it asks for username and password etc. I put all that in and it trys to go through and then rejects iit saying the security settings may not be right or something like that. Any ideas??
I have 4 computer hooked into a switch as well as a brand new network printer. 3 of the 4 print fine after the drive install etc. When i get to the 4th it cant find the printer. I checked domain etc everything there is fine. I found out i cant ping any of the pcs hooked into this switch and none of them can ping this one. But i can ping computer 2 switches and a router away. Any ideas???

So are you saying the 4th computer is getting responses to pings from other hardware?
How is TCP/IP being handled? DHCP?
Have you compared the gateway addresses on the PCs 1 through 3 against number 4, to see if they're all the same?
yes it recieves and can ping hardware not on that switch. also it has internet but no network access.

Open a command window on one of the PCs that can see the printer. Type in IPCONFIG/ALL and hit the Enter key.
Do the same on the 4th computer which cannot see the printer. Are the gateway addresses and subnet masks the same? Have you tried plugging the network cable from the 4th PC into another port?
Yes they are and yes I did.

Okay, I'll need your help so I can visualise your setup here. You have a switch, which has 4 PCs and a printer connected to it. How is this switch connected to the rest of the network?
I found out i cant ping any of the pcs hooked into this switch and none of them can ping this one.
Where are you trying to ping these PCs from? I'm assuming when you say "...and none of them can ping this one," you mean you're trying to ping the 4th PC from any of the other 3 PCs connected to the same switch. Is that correct?
But i can ping computer 2 switches and a router away.
From where? The 4th PC? I'm not entirely sure about this one.
Do you have software firewalls running on the PCs connected to this switch? Bear in mind: most of them will not respond to a ping command, by design. If you do have software firewalls running on them, disable them temporarily and see if you get any responses.
No firewalls not even the windows one

I don't mean to be rude, but you're not really giving me a lot to work with here. I'm happy to try and help you, but it's a two-way process. The reason I'm asking all these questions is because I don't have the equipment in front of me, and I'm trying to work it through in my mind to try and give you the best advice I can. I hope you understand :)

I would start with moving the problem PC network circuit to another port in the switch. If it starts working it is a bad port in the switch.
Check physical network cabling with known good cable.
Check computer name for correctness and duplicate names.
I would check the network adapter in Device Manager for issues.
Finally I would install a NIC card and see if that fixes the issue.
Is this an Active Directory network?

Clear the VLAN config on the switch.
