Hello, I did some house cleaning on my PC (Win 98 OS) and deleted the Plus files associated with Win 95. Now, A few of my desktop icon changed. Please help me to restore them back to their original state.
I tried going to control panel, display, effects, and the effects tab is not their. Please help.
Thanks,
Tobias

Go to control panel > add and remove programs > windows setup tab > uncheck windows themes and choose apply after thay are removed add them back the same way. (setup will ask for your win 98 CD so you might want to have it handy)

or....reboot to command prompt only type at the prompt: scanreg_/restore
with the (_) underscore respresenting a s_pace.
you will be presented with a list of registry dates. Choose one prior- to when you had installed the offending program or change.
reboot, and it should be back like it was. (hopefully)
You could have no IDEA of the amount of computer work I get from people trying to "Clean up" their hard drives.... one guy deleted his D Drive last week "to save space"... LOL

After trying the "scanreg_/restore option, things seem to have gotten worst.....Now I get the following errors starting: c:\\windows\system\lz32.dll and windows\system\vmm32.vxd which indicates a "SAGE.VXD" error. Lastly I get Error loading "powrprof.dll" but after I select ok, system works fine so far. Any suggestions on fixing this.
Thanks,
Tobias

Hmm...first time I've seen scanreg actually cause problems...and it's the same thing I would have recommended in this case.
Try scanreg_/fix and see if it helps. that should correct any faulty registry errors, or you might also try restoring the registry again with an earlier copy.
Also check Device Manager and see if anything has a yellow exclamation point (!) beside it. If so, boot into Safe Mode and remove each, one at a time, reboot and let Windows install them again. Also remove any duplicates, those could be allowing "ghost" drivers to cause problems. In the case of duplicate entries remove all copies of a particular device shown in Safe Mode.
