Can anyone offer some insight to whether I am being short changed by my webmaster. Paying $3000 a year for his hosting a web page and updating information once per month. Most of this is static information, no graphics etc. Mostly what I want him to do for my small company is to update my statistical data and put information on the site for my employees. He is driving me crazy with, "Oh, wait until you see how I've changed your site so it gets more hits." I just want him to keep certain parts of the site up to date. I hope this isn't too lame of a question, but I really need some advice here. Is this something I could learn to do myself? I am comfortable with computers but don't know html and all that?

Does that price also include the webspace or just the maintenance of the site?

I've seen places where you can get 50MB of web space for under $20/month and for the balance you can take a few html cousres, buy a ton of books, grab an html editing program (there are several that are wizard driven...don't really need to know html) and start doing it yourself...

I wouldn't mind finding about 8 or 10 sites to do that for.... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

He hosts the site, if that's what you mean, and maintains it. Basically, all I want him to do is update three pages of the site, once per month. I email the changes to him.

My 2 cents --

You should have your own domain name. Do you have a domain name? Who OWNS the domain name? If you do NOT have a domain name registered in YOUR name, then this is an unethical practitioner, and you should lose him as fast as possible.

He should be providing Name Serving and Mail Serving as well as Web Serving. That is, you should be able to receive mail at ceo@mycompany.com and any other addresses like info@mycompany.com and sales@mycompany.com

The going price for the above services is about $50/month.

The important questions are: Who does your marketing? Who writes the copy? Who does the Graphic Design? Who does the HTML? Who does the promotion? You couldn't hire a Public Relations company with a Madison Avenue address for $3K/yr.

What do you want your Web site to do? Is it only for internal use? Or are you trying to use it to promote your business?

If the latter, then you're paying $200/month for "Internet Promotion and Web Development." At $50/hr, this is 4 hours per month. If the guy is doing that much, then you're proably getting your money's worth.

How's the service? Is the guy responsive to your needs? Does a human being answer the phone when you call? Talk to the guy about your needs -- ask him to train you to do some of the tasks.

Cheers --

putting up & updating a web site isn't all that difficult & there are plenty of progs about which don't require any html. the difficult and more important aspect is driving traffic to your site by getting listed in search engines etc. this is what takes the time and effort.

If 'hits' ie visitors (customers) to your site is important, then you need to check this by looking at your hit counter & comparing that with similar bussinesses, to see if your getting your moneys worth.

There are plenty out there ready to take your money whilst providing little in return. Check out some of the offers above if your looking for customers, whereas if its just a site for employees do it yourself if you wish. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

for every question there's an answer. Then a load more questions.

Thanks for all of your advice! Based on your input and looking into this more, I think my best bet is to bring this in-house. I found I can have a site hosted for a small fee, with administrative access. One of my employees is going to learn to do the updates to keep the site current. I figure I will save about $2000.
