Hi there,
Ever since visiting kijiji.com I have this pop-up window which repeatedly asks me to log in. This is what comes up:
"This server currencysource.com at currencysource.com requires a user-name and password. Warning: This server is requesting that your user-name and password be sent in an insecure manner (basic authentication without a secure connection)." Then it asks for me to type in a user-name and password.
If I type in anything for the user-name and password, it will go away until I restart my computer. If I close it out, it will pop-up every 10 minutes or so. Is this a virus?
I've done every virus scan I could think of with no results. An F-secure scan, zone alarm, malware scan, hi-jack this showed nothing. Is there anything I can do to stop this pop-up? I think it's damaging my computer every time I try closing it out or putting in a user-name & password.
Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry for the delay:
How to run a scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) or Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html)
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.[/QUOTE]
Reboot and then:
Post the MBAM log
Post a new HJT log
Tell me how the system is running

I should also mention that every time I start the computer or reboot, that's what seems to activate the pop-up. So I'm wondering if it's in the start menu somewhere.

There is nothing in your log. Have you checked your browser home page settings?
merryjack

Yes. It is the same settings I've always had, nothing has changed. I even did a RegDefense scan and although it got rid of some stuff, the pop-up continues. It does go away if I enter any username and password but what is it doing to my computer? Why is it even there?
I guess this is going to take a while to figure out how to completely get rid of the thing.

Can you take a screen snapshot
Well Kijiji is not the problem, currencysource is.
If I put currencysource.com or http://currencysource.com/ in my address box in Firefox I get a login popup but if I try random usernames and passwords the logon screen just repeats.
If tried with Internet Exploder, I get a different looking login popup that has a warning which looks like this:
Warning: This server is requesting that your username and password be sent in an insecure manner (basic authentication without a secure connection).
Putting fictitious user/password just brings me to a page with (text only below, links not forwarded):
Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage What you can try: Diagnose Connection Problems More information
Somewhere along the way you must have registered with them somehow through ebay classifieds (kijiji) to be able to purchase something from a foreign exchange and you needed to exchange American dollar for whatever else it was you were required to use to purchase with. Therefore they have put either a cookie or other data onto your computer.
I would try clearing cookies and also take a look in Add/remove for the slim chance to see if anything associated with currencysource is listed there. Makes me wonder if an Evercookie is involved.
Also msconfig in Run may show something in the startup list tab relating to currencysource. You could uncheck that entry which would stop the autologin on reboot but it would not remove the problem.
Another spot to look for anything that will start up on a reboot is putting services.msc in the Run Box and looking through that. If anything shows up resembling currencysource try right clicking on it and disabling it temporarily. If it fixes the reboot issue, we'll need to find the culprit in your Registry and remove it from there permanently.
Please do not mess with anything else but this problem. I do not want to see your computer messed up by making wrong choices in sensitive areas.
One other possibility is that the website where the item was purchased from may be the culprit here and they are initiating the popup window rather than the currencysource website.

classicsoftware - I've attached the screenshot.
FTT - Thanks very much for your suggestions. I tried everything you listed including clearing out my cookies and there's still no change, I also did not purchase anything from anywhere in these last couple of months. However, the msconfig in run showed these that I do not recognize in the start-up list...
C:\Windows\ehome\ehtray.exe
C:\Windows\system32\igfxtray.exe
C:\Windows\system32\hkcmd.exe
C:\Windows\system32\igfxpers.exe
C:\Windows\system32\ctfmon.exe
Maybe you will recognize something that should be deleted.

The programs you listed are all OK. This comes on regardless if you are on line, is that correct? What version of windows do you have?
merryjack

Yes, it comes regardless if I am online or not. It will start as soon as everything loads in after I turn on my computer. To cancel it out, I use Alt-F4 twice before it stops until I reboot, it starts all over again.
I have Windows XP (Media Center) SP3
When (what date) did the first pop-up appear? Do you have a system restore date just prior to this you can select?
Anything downloaded or installed from the date you choose to the present will be lost if you follow through so it is best to save anything in between on separate media before going with the restore route.
I would think, considering there is no 'infection' that your restore points are OK but wait for the go-ahead from Classicsoftware before attempting it.

Hi, My first post on here so be gentle!!
I found the solution for this as we have started seeing a few PCs at work with this window.
It's part of Google Desktop!!!
I couldnt see how to disable it so i just deleted it from the users profile :
c:\documents and setting\(users profile)\My documents\MyGoogle Gadgets\
it's called Currency Converter -Ankit Patel.gg
Just delete the above file and it doesnt come up any more.
Before just deleting, try to find out if it can be uninstalled via Add/Remove Programs.
Olds cool,
Welcome aboard and thanks for the heads-up! :)
Edit:
Though Googling about, I do not find Currencysource to be associated with the converter which Google has to offer. AAMOF, there is a page where currencysource replied that it's own converter cannot be modified and used on the Google Desktop.

Thanks FTT,
IIRC it didn't show up on add/remove programs as a separate entity, i just checked back with my user and it's been fine since i removed it so looks like it's done the job.

FTT - The only option I could see was to remove it which I did. This solves the problem. : ) Thanks for all your help I appreciate it so much!!
Olds cool - IT WORKED!!! Thank you soo much. I removed the widget from the file you suggested and it immediately solved the problem. However, I noticed in the file that there were other currency converter files which were:
-Currency Converter - Ankit Patel
-Currency Converter - Currency Systems, Inc.
-Currency Converter - Rodrigo Diaz
-Currency Converter - Umakanthan
-Currency Exchange Monitor - T. Nishizawa
I deleted them all but I was just wondering if you knew where they came from, seeing as I did not install them myself? Thanks again for your magic!!!
