I cannot for the life of me install an operating system on a newly formatted machine. I have cd rom support but when I type D:\setup.exe at the A:\ prompt I get a "Bad command or file name" message, or I get a message that reads "Cannot run program in MS-Dos" I have tried everything I can think of. I have tried everything I have read. What am I missing. It has got to be somthing simple. I should mention that I dont exactly have a cd with an operating system on it really. I have a copy of Windows XP pro, and I have a recovery disk for win 98. Could this be the problem. I guess with limited computer experience I am used to throwing a cd in the drive and letting it run. I am at my wits end . I hate to call in a "Proffessional" because that would defeat the whole learning process. I would greatly apreciate any and all help I can get with this problem.
I should also mention that this computer is an older 200Mhz Packard bell R515.

What exactly do you mean by "a copy of Windows XP pro"? A copy made by a CD-RW?

Is the recovery CD from Packard Bell? For your system?

When using a good Win 98 boot disk with CD-ROM support and a RAM Drive your drives are kicked up a letter...try e: If you didn't get an error message while it was going through installation of the RAM Drive with CD-ROM support then the drivers on the boot disk should work for your CD-Rom http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

was gonna add, if it was the above (and you downloaded it)- you either have a corrupt, incomplete copy that you don't know how to open.
