Help w/ a LTE 5380

I purchased a Compaq LTE 5380 and need some help.
Anyone have any expertise with this older Laptop?

I powered up, and the screen showed insert Boot Disc.
Don,t have one yet, its coming from Compaq. Powered off.
Powered up pressed F10 BIOS screen came up. Perused screen familiarizing
myself with settings, changed boot sequence, to boot from HD. That is where
WIN98 is. Only problem is I don't have the HD yet. I do have a second HD
but it is empty right now. Not sure if I goofed doing the boot sequence change or not. Powered off.
I fiddled with the docking station install, just to see how it was supposed
to fit, undocked it, and put it on my desk.
Powered up again, but this time no screen, F10 did nothing, the power on
and off switch would not shut it off, had to pull power jack out. (Using AC
adapter for power).
As long as I don't touch any thing pertaining to the power switch and the suspend button, I can turn the power on and off, there is a short squawk
from the speakers, but nothing comes on the screen.
What have I done wrong, why will the screen not show me anything?
