the charge for my isp has just gone up. I found a limited choice when I signed up but felt that this was the best deal. so far it's been pretty good exept for the fact that I can't get good download speeds. I have used tweakdun (amongst others) and had my line 'gain' turned up which has improved matters, but it still does not seem as good as it should.
I have also read that the 'pop' account which the isp is using is the real influence on speeds.
so how does one choose? I'm mainly on my home computer evenings and weekends, so am currently on an 'off peak' package. I'm sure many of you are similar in usage, so what do you recomend?

Assuming that you are not considering dsl or cable, here's my 2 cents.

I've had lots of ISPs. Currently I'm using ATT WorldNet Service. I have a bundle that includes long distance service. It's called 7/7 and it includes:
* 7¢ a minute on state-to-state long distance
* Unlimited dial-up access
* 6 POP accounts
* $7 per month
http://download.att.net/get7/

I signed up with the phone company, they sent me the dialer application on CD, and it insisted that I give it my credit card info -- that really pissed me off.

It's got a netZero kind of advertisement if you use the dialer, but I was able to get around that and create a dial-up connection through windoz.

The quality is about as good as it gets.

space ... thanks http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

just this evening I set up a guys pc with the at&t 7/7 cd.

it seemed very strong and fast for a dial up account.

I didn't even think about the stupid ad box (getting rid of it that is.....)

and it was simple to set up outlook express email account.

I'll get rid of that ad box for him tommorow, he should be happy.. hehe
