Second,my Mother has just started to use the internet on her first pc(she`s 82), when she clicks Internet explorer the page opens with a password box asking to log on to windows, it`s jut a nuisance,How do I get rid?.

1) go to Start->Programs->StartUp - If there is anything in there that you don't want to start on boot, then delete link from that location.
2) i think it all has to do with Control Panels: Users and Passwords, but I'm sure that I don't know what the "correct" settings are. I tend to follow the lead of my children -- just hit all the buttons and see what happens.

Hello tom, i'll try to help you with the booting question first; if you have programs running that you do not want, then the first place to look is in your start/programs/startup folder-just delete anything in ther you don't want to start.( or you can create a folder and move theose shortcuts ot it temporarily in case you wish to restore htem later.) You can also run the system configuration utility( type msconfig in the run box to bring it up ) and look under your startup tab for programs you want to disable by unchecking them, Be Careful! some of those programs are necessary for windows to function( like loadprofile, system tray, stillmage monitor, also there will be programs you want to start up like your antivirus and printer ) If you would post what you see in that box, someone will be able to help you determine what to shutdown.
As for your mum's logon box with IE; are you sure it's a windows logon? you would normally only see that when first boot and windows loads if you given it a password. I can't think of why windows would show a logon screen for IE, are you maybe thinking about the modem logon screen for her isp? Maybe one of the other gurus here will have a better idea about this issue, sorry i can't help more. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Thank`s Bob
I did what you said and my comp is now running at 95% at startup.
The annoying problem with my Mum`s pc persists. She now tells me She seems
to remember a box apearing asking for a password, so She typed in Her username and password for Hotmail,(Daft Bugger)I think there must be a facility within her system(win 95) that allows you to logon using a password, but I can`t detect it.
Never mind if all else fails I can always SHOOT HER,LOL.
Regards, Tom.

Hi Tom
Not too sure so check it out.
Go to find and type in "*.pwl" (without quotes) this brings up a folder with all your Windows passwords, just delete it. Your mum might get another request for a password but tell her just to click on the "X" (top right hand corner), and that should solve the problem of password.
!!!BUT!!! wait for someone else to respond to confirm or reject my solution.

Deleting the pwl file shouldn't hurt anything, it will get rid of any passwords, and Windows will simply create wa new, empty one on reboot. Not sure if it will clear up the problem, but it might.

Under "Post Reply" (at top of this thread or any other) is Preferences..click on that and check the box for user name and password. I was experimenting recently with the "prompt" on cookies option in IE, and had to type a "k" in the user name box for awhile here every time I posted, but the rest of it popped in by itself.
