I just bought a new modem and it makes the dialing sounds when I sign on the the internet. These sounds come directly from the modem, not through speakers. I would like to turn them off but I don't know how. So, how do I turn the sounds off?

I got laughed at for this one here once http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif but I like to put a piece of tape over the little hole on the little speaker on the modem. I like to know its working but don't want to hear that obnoxious noise at full volume.
Of course you can co to .. start>settings>control panel>modems>select your modem>properties. There you will find a volume control that will shut it off. If I remember correctly, Win 95 will allow you to just lower the volume. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

It's nice to know if we helped you out. Please let us know IF and WHAT fixed the problem.

Thank you for your reply. Sounds like it should work. If not, next time I get on I'll let you know.

Hey,

I could never get my ISA hardware modem speaker turned off by going to the modem properties. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif Has anyone else had this problem? Turning the volume off on a software modem is no problem though.

BB66,

Me too. I just tried it on a friends win98se machine and it didn't work.

The modem on my own computer has never made so much as a beep. I like it.

BB and whoever else.

try changing it per account, not in the general modems section of control panel.

Right click on "Your Connection"> left click properties> in "General TAB", under "Connect using"> click "Configure".

there you will see volume controls for that particular modems speaker.

if that doesn't work- I'm sure bassman would be willing to send you some TAPE!!

On a hardware modem you can go into a "Terminal" program and type the following: ATM0&W that will kill the sound http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif....the "0" is a zero.

Hey Sea,

I guess I'll take some of that tape. Better make it a roll. I can't find anything on my comp. that says "your connection". I sent your directions to two of my friends (figuring I was just missing something) and they had no luck either.

Could you fill me in? I'm feelin' alittle dumb right now.

Whoever.

bassman: Think that tape idea will work on a UPS alarm? Very quiet here in the boonies, and that UPS alarm puts me on the ceiling every time (twice yesterday, and once today so far).

Sea: Can't find that "Your Connection" either..???

kay

"your connection" = whatever specific account that you use to connect that you wish to adjust the modems sound on.

go to start> programs> accessories> communications> dialup networking.

you will see all listed accounts there.

for instance: I have 3 seperate backup dial up accounts, and my DSL.. get it?

(don't forget Randy's advice either)

Sea: Did have an "Oh" moment earlier and checked that under My Computer to Dial Up Networking, etc. Do always hesitate to click on a Configure button though!

Three dialups and a DSL?? Gosh, must be heaven.
