Heres a Link to the Program I use to share my cable modem. http://www.internetshare.com/index.htm

It allows you to setup one system as a server and share with others at the same time.
It doesn't require a second nic

Hey Rick, who is your cable provider (mine is charter), I live about 30 min. NW of Milwaukee and they don't offer cable yet.

You should be able to connect to the internet formo both PCs.
Connect the modem to the Uplink port of the hub and then the 2 PCs to the other two ports of the hub.
I use 2 NICs (they are chip) An Hub with 3 ports, and of course an Modem.

Turidigital I have a dsl modem hooked up to a hub and then from the hub to the 2 computers. I have put the sysmpatico software on both computers.

It is not a static IP (the ip changes everytime you log on which I dont think the pronblem is).

Is there any network settings that I need to change or is buying software the only option.

I thought I could set up a network with computer names and everything but I still have not found a webpage that really describes it step by step.

Thanks

Adam

If you have the DSL line connected to the hub then every computer that uses it must have an IP address that your ISP has assigned. In this case your ISP will either assign you a range of Private IP addresses that map to one public IP address or assign you several public IP addresses. If you only have one ISP assigned IP address this would explain why only one computer at a time can use the DSL line. You'll need to either get extra IP addresses assigned or use one of the following methods.

If you want to use internet connection sharing software. You'll need to connect the DSL line to one computer first. Then have a second connection from that computer to your hub. ( This computer would become the "gateway") All other computers on your network would only need a connection to the hub. The sofeware setup would enable the other computers to "talk" to the gateway whenever they needed to connect to the internet. The gateway would then take care of sending those request out the DSL line.

(The sofeware Rick is using could also work by "binding" 2 IP addresses to one Lan card. That one Lan card would then behave like 2. That's my best guess as to how it works without a second Lan card on the gateway computer.)

A third option would require that you buy a router that would replace the hub your using now but not require the additional IP addresses.

Hope this helps http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

thanks ghost_hacker that explains it all. Will be using tha internet sharing methosd through win 98. I have installed 2 network cards into the main computer and 1 in the other have the dsl modem going directly to computer 1 then have a crossover cable going to the 2nd computer.

Got that far then started installing the win98 internet sharing stuff on the first computer but it kept confusing the 2 network cards. I would say I wanted the 530tx as the internet card and when i start up the internet I would have to rearange the cables and the other card would work.

Also when installing that software it would make a disk and I have many articles but I still have no idea when to use or how to use the disk.

Anyways I used the ms walkthrough and an other one but they where not detailed for me. I suck at networking I just failed my second semester of it in college and I am still trying to grasp simple terms and that is why I am trying to set this up(been a month lol).

Anyways I am looking for a simplified step by step set of instructions for the internet sharing resource that comes with win98.

Thanks to all that have helped so far

Here's some information on that "disk" which is the last step performed on all the client computers. ( the following is taking from this web article : http://www.zdnet.com/zdhelp/stories/main/0,5594,2279694,00.html

"Running the Browser Connection Setup Wizard

After you've made sure that the TCP/IP settings are correctly configured on all your client computers, you'll then run the Browser Connection Setup wizard on each client computer on your home network. To begin, insert the Client Configuration Disk into the floppy disk drive and access the Run dialog box from the Start menu. Then, type A:\Icsclset.exe in the Open text box and click OK.

In a moment, you'll see the Browser Connection Setup wizard's introductory screen, which contains a few instructions that you should read over before you proceed. The most important instruction here is to make sure that the Connection Sharing computer is already connected to the Internet.

When you click the Next button, the Browser Connection Setup wizard will inform you that it will now check and change your browser's connection settings. To continue, simply click the Next button.

You'll then see the final screen in the Browser Connection Setup wizard. You can then choose to immediately connect to the Internet through the Connection Sharing computer when you click Finish. As soon as you do, the browser on your client computer will launch, connect to the Internet through the Connection Sharing computer and open the home page.

From this point on, you can simultaneously access the Internet from all the computers on your network. To do so, just connect the Connection Sharing computer to the Internet and then launch the browser on the client computer. "
