This may be a stupid question, but why is it a good idea to boot into Safe Mode to remove modems? Why is it a bad idea to remove modems in Normal Mode?

Hey Mike,
Removing components in Safe Mode serves at least two purposes:
1) There is less chance of problems arising, as Safe Mode is a bare-bone Windows system that has only the necessary drivers loaded to run.
2) Safe Mode enables you to see ALL devices listed in Device Manager. Normal mode only lists the current component being used. However, after upgrading components, many of the "ghost" drivers and/or listings from previous units are still there and sometimes will cause conflicts. In Safe Mode, you can see the current as well as previous units. It's always a good idea to remove all of them.
Cheers,
