Hi,
I recently installed a new IBM Deskstar 40.0 gig hard drive to my pc. I loaded Windows 98 on it and everything appears fine. My problem is when I go to leave my pc for awhile, the computer gets a blank black screen with a little line flashing (kinda like dos). I try to use the computer but it doesn't respond and the screen stays black with the little flashing line? Is something wrong with the hard drive? Please help? Thanks.

Hey Diz,

Single horizontal underscore, flashing?

kinda like suspend mode on a portable?

Go into control panels and see if power scheme is set to "portable/laptop"

I think the OS thinks you've got a laptop ??

Good luck --

Hi Space,
I did what you said and it was on Always On and I change it to Home/Office mode. Hopefully that will fix it. I will have to wait and see. Thanks...

Did you set the System Standby to "Never"? It can still go into Standby when in the "Always On" mode. You might also need to disable Power Management in the BIOS.

The current settings I have it in is on Home/Office for the Power Scheme. For the System Standby and Turn off Hard Disk I have it on never. Is that the correct way to have it?

Follow reid's advice - Go into your CMOS settings and check to see if power management is enabled and what options are choosen. Try disabling all power management options and go from there.

Most times windows power options can overide whatever CMOS power options but i have an IBM that proved otherwise...

Hi,
I did all of the suggestions and I am still getting the same annoying screen. Anything else to try?
