Greetings,

I am author of the definitive guide for using and enjoying Puppy Linux. There is no easier way to get started with Linux than by visiting [urlLINK REMOVED] Nothing is easier or more intuitive to use than Puppy Linux and few OS are as fully featured. Puppy Linux is fast on old computers and insanely fast on new computers plus it comes with a [urLINK REMOVEDfull suite of software (http:LINK REMOVED). There is no easier way to get started with Linux than by visiting LINK REMOVED

Regards,
Puppyite (a.k.a. shortround)

Nice, but we don't allow self promotion here unless IXL clears it first.

My mistake however I saw no prohibition against this. Further my site is Not for Profit.

Who / what is IXL? (Answer: If found IXL here (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/memberlist.php?do=getall&page=21&order=asc&sort=username&ltr=I)

IXL is the webmaster of this site.

I see Sylvander posted a link to my site some time ago where he says “See this recently started Puppy Linux FAQ (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showpost.php?p=440476&postcount=4).” Thanks Sylvander.

I regularly post links at the Puppy forums, to items on the PC-Guide, and/or Paul Komski's website or wherever, and vice-versa.

I don't do this to promote any forum or website, or whatever; it's just to pass on useful info or resources.

Sometimes people at the Puppy forums are helped with Windows [by me and others]...
Sometimes here at the PC-Guide they are helped with Puppy Linux.

I think the important thing is to be helpful without thought for personal gain or profit.

Anyone who visits puppylinuxfaq.org will see that it is a Not for Profit help site. I do not derive any gain or profit from it.

I would just point out that we are plagued by people who arrive at these forums only to promote something or other in both overt and devious ways and the fact that something is not for profit doesn't change this. I am sure you are well meaning and the fact that the link was simply removed and you were not banned bears testimony to this.

I also note that there is a page on the site entitled "Buy Puppy Linux Live Disc or Preloaded USB Flash Drive". That too may or may not be on a non-profit basis but the lines do become a bit blurred.

Do stick around and contribute to these forums since you seem to want to help others.

I am at a disadvantage as I am unable to link to the page so others may see that I also state the following (on the linked page) (which you did not read): “The above links are provided for the convenience of this site's visitors. Puppy Linux FAQ is not affiliated with and does not derive any gain from the above web sites.”

Those who are knowledgeable would (if I put a link to the page) know that the links to the sites who sell those products do not contain the necessary code to identify where the visitor was when he/she clicked it and thus there is no profit or gain by me.

Let me state this as clearly as I can: I DO NOT MAKE ANY MONEY FROM THE PUPPYLINUXFAQ.ORG

I will also state as clearly as I can that self-promotion, even if for charity, is seen in a very similar light to self-promotion for commercial reasons - particularly when we have no track record of you as a peep on these forums.

Nit-picking about what is or is not on individual pages gains little and all I said on the issue of profit was that the issue was blurred. To impugn others' knowledgeability also does you little credit and I am sure that you are knowledgeable enough to know that the more third party links you can establish to your site the more likely you are to move up search engine rankings. Nor have we any idea of how any non-profit motive may change in the future.

PS You don't need a link to find your site - it is clearly written in the title of this thread and if this futile conversation continues much longer that too will be removed. You are at complete liberty to ask the site owner if he will allow you to advertise in this way and I, for one, will not presume what his answer may be.

@Paul I defer to your superior knowledge.

Moderators' functions are primarily to uphold the ethos of the forums' owner. Some knowledge is part and parcel of those functions but it is not a prerequisite and not of preeminent importance..

Paul,

I had unsubscribed from this but wondered if you understood my last post and I see you didn’t, apparently it was too obscure. This may enlighten you: Sarcasm (http://www.onelook.com/?w=sarcasm&ls=a). At least your post didn’t include any other incorrect assumptions so that shows some progress. In future try not to paint everyone you meet with the same broad strokes and watch those ASSumptions.

Goodbye,
