What PDA are you using? i've got a visor deluxe and an old Compaq pocketpc( aero ). i use the visor the most and i use palm's 4.01 desktop, i used to have it sync with outlook 2000; but i now have it synced with Outlook express.
Try this if you're using a visor:

To synchronize e-mail with Outlook Express, you need to alter two settings:
A. Run Mail Setup from the Palm Desktop folder and select Outlook Express as your Email program.
B. You must change the default mail client to Outlook Express on your PC (the MAPI setting):

1. Click on the HotSync Manger icon (usually at the bottom right corner of screen).
2. Click on the "Custom" option.
3. Highlight the "Mail" conduit and click on the Change button.
4. Click on the radio button beside "Synchronize the files".
5. Click on the "Mail Setup" button.
6. Click on the "Synchronize with" drop down menu.
7. Select "Microsoft Outlook Express".
8. Click the Next button.
9. Click the Finish button.
10. Click on Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options | Programs Tab
11. Change the e-mail client to Outlook Express, then click Apply and the OK button and exit this window.

If you are using Outlook Express 4.x, perform these last steps 12 to 15:
12. Open Outlook Express
13. Click on Tools | Options
14. Select the radio button labelled "Make Outlook Express my Default Simple MAPI Client". (Again, note that this only applies to Outlook Express 4.x NOT 5.x or higher.)
15. Close Outlook Express (as well as Outlook) and attempt a synchronization. For your first attempt, it is best if you have just a few modest sized e-mail items in the Inbox.
you can use these same tips for outlook98 just replace it where you see outlook express.
