How do I get to know the model of the router that is installed? It's hidden behind cables and I cant reach it. I have to forward ports so I need to know which model router is installed. I also dont have a user guide anymore. I can get access to the router menu, but I have to type in a password.

Assuming WinXP or later.

Enter ipconfig /all at a command prompt.

Scroll through the output and look for the address of the default gateway (which is most commonly the router).

Open a browser and in the address bar enter:
http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
substituting the address of the default gateway for xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

This should then prompt you for a logon name and password. Most often these have not been changed and are likely to be admin and admin respectively.

If you cannot get into the router's settings this way you will need, AFAIK, to physically reach the router and read its model number and also if necessary depress its reset button to reset it to its default values.

Most often these have not been changed and are likely to be admin and admin respectively.

If it's one of the older Linksys routers and the defaults haven't been changed, the login should be left blank and the password will be admin.

Without knowing the router make/model it is of course a shot in the dark regardless - though if it has been logged on to before using the same PC and browser the settings may have been retained.

A more complete list (http://www.anameless.com/blog/default-passwords.html) (and far from being complete and which will probably do your head in).

I know that it is a router that has wireless access. also password hasnt been changed. Password should be in the manual, but I have no idea where the manual is. I tried default admin/admin settings (for user and password?) but it didnt work. this is the screen as i try to access the router.

1. We or you have to know the make/model of the router to know what the default entries should be.

2. Once those are known they can be tried out and it that fails the router needs to be reset back to its defaults by depressing its reset button with a pin or whatever.

Or replace it with a new router. ;)

I agree w/Paul. It's difficult to render a definitive answer when you don't give all the details, okeee. If you have the make and model, you can generally find soft copies of manuals on line from the manufacturer's website. Failing that, a full reset of the router can be employed, although obviously you'd have to dig it out to do that.

I have access to the router, tried forward some ports but it didnt work. I used guide at portforward.com . Any idea to check what could be wrong? I set up static ip and already checked all the numbers, they seem correct.

okeee,

Once again, it's difficult to render a definitive answer when you don't give all the details. What's the make and model of the router? We're more than happy to help, but we can't do so effectively without all the facts.

If you can now get into the router (as seems to be the case) just exactly what application are you attempting to access using port forwarding and which computer on the LAN is to serve this application?

By static IP are you talking about the public ID as seen from the internet or are you attempting to not use DHCP and for whatever reason set static IP addresses within the LAN.

its probabably static ip in lan, I just followed the guide. I checked ports with a website and they seem closed.

If you're trying to get Starcraft II to work, are you using a software firewall by any chance? I use Comodo, and I had to configure that to let the game work properly through Steam.
