low sound on compaq pressario cq61

had this brand new about 6 months ago, sound is about the same as previous advent, but about 25% of what toshiba satalite was.
the sat was good on about half power, whereas its a job to hear the pressario on full power,
seems ok on headphones but not on speakers

thanks whyzman. its w7. th troubleshooter couldnt find a problem, but put me in th right place to experiment.
loudness correction made a big difference, and now satisfactory, although further experimentation when time allows will follow.
