I have the Toshiba Satellite laptop model 305d-8900...
It is stuck in sleep mode, and I have had no luck getting it to come out....
It is one year and one month old and has vista installed.
I try to press the power button to turn the laptop on, and it goes right into sleep mode....That is all...The only other thing I have been able to do is turn it off....
I have tried various function keys to get it to come out...and different combinations of holding the power button to get it to power off and on...but seems only postions are sleep and off....
What could be causing this...and how do i fix it please?

You could try a couple of things here...
Plug the AC adapter into the notebook and leave it for 2-3 hours to charge. If the battery power is low, this could affect it when trying to get out of sleep mode.
Power down the laptop, remove the battery and AC adapter cord, and then hold down the power button for several seconds. This will dissipate any power stored in the capacitors. After that, plug in the AC adapter and try powering up the laptop. Does this work? More importantly, does the power light show when you plug in the adapter?
It may be a power issue but if you still don't get anything after trying the above, get back to us and we'll try a different strategy.

I basically agree with LochLomonder
Remove the battery completely
Attach the power supply (but not the battery) and try and turn the laptop on.
If that gets you in then re-attach the battery and see if you can get it to charge.
Adapters do fail and a multimeter/voltmeter can confirm this.

Thanks for the advice. I ended up bringing it in to find out the motherboard is bad.
Am trying to find a new one. Keep being told I'm stuck with a $1000 paperweight.
I don't understand how my cheap lil toshiba laptops lasted years, yet spend the money on a "better" one and its a p.o.s?

anason,
I think this has been a general trend across competing companies. They try to make their products as cheaply as possible, but this results in lower quality standards.
Until recently I still had an old Pavilion zv5330us (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=433744), which I bought in 2004. It was rock-solid and never gave me any problems. In fact, the only real problem I had was self-inflicted when I kicked the power supply by mistake, and this broke off the DC power adapter from the motherboard.
At that time HP produced great-quality laptops, leastways in my opinion, but they and others such as Dell, Toshiba, etc. have suffered due to the slipping standards I mentioned previously.
