View Full Version : "Show Up Preventer"

The "Google Toolbar" has a feature which will prevent 'Pop Ups'. Some websites I visit from time to time include advertising which obviously are not 'Pop Ups' (not stopped by Google) so I'll call them 'Show Ups' or 'Crawl Ups'. They are ads for 'free games', screen savers, creating a cartoon from your picture and a plethora other useless stuff but, even with the Google Toolbar active, they show up as additional windows or as a 'crawl up' just above the Systray in the lower right. Some wind up onscreen, superimposed on the 'parent' page, complete with video + sound. It's all very creative but also very irritating.
Has there been a "Preventer" developed to kill this stuff?

Personally I hate and detest all 3rd Party Toolbars - period - and never install them.
The sort of dynamic content/behaviour you are describing is mostly due to scripting such as javascript - also necessary for most pop-ups and similar nuisances. If you add the No-Script Add-On (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722/) to Mozilla Firefox you will inhibit just about all such behaviour but be able to enable such content on sites that you want or need it from the icon in the bottom right of the browser window.
The pics below show PCGuide allowed and then googlesyndication denied.

Hello LouieLouie,
The link below is about pop-ups that keep adding them self to your pop-up blocker allowed site list in IE due to a computer infection.

Paul: I've had several 3rd Party Toolbars and the Google is the only one I kept.
The second I saw "doubleclick.net" I knew we were on the right track. On IE8, I located Tools/Internet Options/Security/Restricted Sites so I have identified several and have added them to that list. These ads appear on the "Gocomics" site which is the only one where I can find "Red and Rover" and "The Fusco Brothers". Maybe now I can enjoy Rolf, Lance, Axel and the others without the annoying advertising.
Everyone have a happy and safe holiday and, on New Years's Eve.. stay sober enough to remember that you had a good time.
