I would like to try overclocking my Duron 700 for the first time. I have a a mobo (FIC AZ11E) that allow me to do so and I know how (i guess!) to "play" around with the jumpers regarding the CPU clock speed but regarding the internal CPU voltage jumpers which kind of change I have to apply if any? Which other issues I have to take in to account?

thank you

here's (http://members.nbci.com/candjac/duronocpg1.htm) some folks that seem to know!

additionally: the most you can actually hope for is one (1) gig (1000Mhz), as this is an increase of only 300Mhz, I feel the risk outwieghs the possible benefits.

I have an AMD T-Bird @ 800 Mhz, and do not think it worthwhile to go to the 1.2Ghz that they say I can achieve.

unless anyone can convince me it's a good idea!

like to hear what others think on your and my situations..

GH??

hired??

It all depends on how comfortable you are with using a circuit pen to reconnect the L1 bridges on the die...I would refer to the cpu section at www.tomshardware.com (http://www.tomshardware.com) and the link sea provided for specific instructions...

You have the usual risks of overclocking plus the risks of messing with the die to boot...as far as whether it's worthwhile or not, you have to ask why you're doing it...

You will see no difference in performance in most apps...except for cpu intensive things like photo/video/audio editing...maybe some games will run abit faster, but this is far more a vid card issue...

For me, the only real reason to do it would be just for the sake of doing it and I would only try if I had cash on hand to replace the chip...

IMHO overclocking just to get a few more clock cycles isn't really worth it. I'm more interested in the performance of my video card then my processor anyway.

I'll have to go along with the crowd here and tell you , that unless you're doing this for your on educational benefit-you're not going to see much improvement in your processing now, especially not with the duron at only +/- 300mhz. If you truely want to improve performance from your duron, then buy and athlon! For just pennies more you can get the L2 cache size that is missing on the duron, and get a higher clock speed-all without having to damamge your old processor. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif Which you can then sell on eBay ( or give to a deserving kinsman http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif ) to recuperate your payment fro the new athlon. Don't forget that by OCing your chip you void the warrenty, whereas with the purchase of the athlon you get a better/more powerful processor and a warrenty! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Here (http://www.ascotpc.com/support/amd_Duron_thunderbird.htm) is an excellant site detailing the main difference between the duron/athlon and performace ratings.

Something I learned the hard way. Up to 800MHz the performance increase is noticeable. After the spike above 800 the noticeable difference comes slowly. Hard gamer's will say otherwise but so be it. I remember the first T-bird I bought. Sheeesh, wish I'd done that long time ago. And the same goes for my first 7K HDD. Issues? Man O/Cing creates bookoo heat. That FIC board will become unstable if you try to crank it too hard. My only explanation for that is FIC hasn't been in the O/Cing business all that long. Case of monkey see monkey do (on thier part) I guess. Luck.
