I currently have a brand spanken new comp that I just built but I have an old 486DX4 that, from what I hear, can be made into a server. How would I go about doing this?? Ideas, suggestions??
Much appreciated...

Your first step is to decide which operating system you want to use.
If you want to just share files, printers, and the internet connection across the network. Then you can use either a flavor of Unix or Windows95/98.
If you want a "server" then you can install Windows NT3/4,Netware 3/4 or again some flavor of Unix.

I don't think it would be practical to run NT/W2K on a 486DX4. For one thing, you would need a minmum of 64MB RAM...

A 486 with at least 16MB of ram can run NT4 As a file and print server.

Yep. G_H is correct. NT 4 requires
Intel and compatible systems*
486/33 megahertz (MHz) or higher, or Pentium, or Pentium PRO processor.
125 megabyte (MB) of available hard disk space minimum.

Thanks guys. But what is the purpose of having Windows 2000, NT, etc. over regular Win 98, etc?

Server operating systems like Windows NT/2000 can support many more users and services then a "desktop" operating system like Windows9x.

Plus the NT family of OS's have much better security features, better networking capabilities, much more stable...
Also servers can be set up to perform different functions, such as File Servers, which just store files in a central location on the network; Application Servers, which provide programs that can be run from workstations without the software installed on them; Firewall, which acts as an Internet security system; Print Server, which is just that, provides printer access to the network, and other setups are possible.
