I have a PIII,450 mhz,248 ram pc,w/ 2 hard drives. The problem is I could not run defrag and scandisk on my secondary hard drive. I use to have no problems w/ this now I don't know what's up. When I try to do so this error message would come up "you don't have enough memory, blah blah blah, close other running programs and try again...." I'd press ctrl, alt, del and would leave only the "explorer" and the "systray" running but the problem still occurs. Can anyone help me ? TNX !!!

Boot into safe mode when you run these apps, you'll not have anything in the background to " distract " them at that time. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to run Disk Defragmenter (Defrag.exe) or ScanDisk (Scandskw.exe), you may receive one of the following error messages:
Your computer does not have enough free memory to defrag the drive. Quit one or more programs.
ID# Defrag009
ScanDisk could not continue because your computer does not have enough available memory.
CAUSE
This issue can occur if you are running Windows on a hard disk that is larger than 8 gigabytes (GB) in size and has a cluster size less than 8 kilobytes (KB). This configuration may be created if you use a third-party disk tool to create a partition on a hard disk that is larger than 8 (GB) in size and has a cluster size less than 8 KB.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, contact the manufacturer of the third-party hard disk tool to inquire about a possible update to the software that resolves this issue.

Umm, seems sea has pretty much detailed about everything you may need to know about this error; but if you find it too much to comprehend you can copy scandisk.exe from your windows/command folder to your win98 boot floppy and when you get to the command prompt( A:> ) just type: scandisk your drive leter , making sure to leave a space between the command and the destination ( same as you would do for fdisk or format ). There is a defrag utility that you used to could run from DOS, but it's not recommended as it can cuase problems with windows handling of long file names-so i wouldn't recommend using it.
Sorry if this doesn't help u much more.

I would also suggest opening your config file witth notepad and increase the file/buffer size. This may do the trick. If it doesnt. You can always reopen it and restore the settings.

Would you be referring to the config.sys file? You didn't say, just config...
If so, config.sys is not normally used by Windows, and usually should not be altered. Windows does its own memory management, without using config.sys or autoexec.bat. They also would only affect DOS mode, I don't think setting FILES= and BUFFERS= lines in the config.sys would have any affect on Windows or Windows applications.
