I heard about this wake-on-lan and right now I have an interest in persuing how it is done. While looking at different ways to set it up one site mentioned that I have to have a wired connection. If that is true is there a way I could get a second router and link it to the first one so that the main router that is getting the internet sends the internet connection to the second router and will also be able to send a WoL packet to the pc that the second router is hooked up too.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know why you would need a second router?

Why not just skip the middle man?

You don't necessarily need a wired connection if you have the hardware to implement WoWLAN (a wireless solution to WoLAN). It begs the question, though: if you've just heard about it and want to pursue its implementation, is there a concrete reason for doing so? Obviously it's your choice and not for me to tell you otherwise, but it might save you a few headaches if you're just into casual tinkering.

my computor and the router are in seperate parts of the house and i can not connect them by a router (enless i started drilling holes in the walls floors and ceilings) so I was wondering if linking two routers togethere was possible. Also the reason i'm looking into it is because I have seen it used before and it caught my interest so I wanted to test it out basicaly to expand my computor knowledge and get some extra expirence.

It might depend on the router that you have at the PC end, but I was not able to get any of my wireless routers to look for another wireless signal.

WoWLAN - I like it...

Linking two routers together is feasible when you use one as a repeater to clean up and boost the wireless signal. However, is it simply a case right now that the router you have doesn't have wireless capability? Or, if it does, the signal's too weak?

I used to use WoLAN in the work environment and found it to be a pain sometimes. We would use an Intel remote management package, send signals to the PCs on the WAN to waken them so we could work on them, and then close the PCs back down once more. However, PCs would often boot up at random without the specific packets being sent, or would have problems closing back down.

Granted, this was a few years ago and I know technology has progressed since then. All the same, I think it's more of a headache to do this for the sake of tinkering around.

I'm picturing the situation as:

two wireless routers and one wired PC (no wifi).

Net traffic is passed from wireless router to the next wireless router, then to the PC via the wired connection (i.e., use the router as a wifi card with the benefit of plain old WoL).

I'm not saying that would work, just how I view the picture of the set-up being asked for...

Cuc Tu,

That's more or less how I was envisaging it as well, based upon what Dastrok had written. I guess we'll see what they say, if they post back.

That is how I was envisioning it too and I did a little looking and I found some stuff called Wireless access point/bridge which seem to do exactly what I want the second router too do but at the moment that is out of my price range. Also I was looking in my BIOS to enable something to turn WoL on but all I could find was a Wake on PCI card which sounds similar but makes it seem like I need some piece of hardware that I have to put in the pc.
