how do I add a hit counter to my site? Does it have to be 'hosted' by a provider? I've seen several free ones advertised but what is the catch? how do they work?

I would prefer to produce & control my own if this is possible.

Any advice would be appreciated.

You can go to this site, Beseen.com (http://www.beseen.com/index.html) they offer free hit counter service, and you can use them on all your pages, it's completely free-seems to work pretty good. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Vic,
If you don't want to use a commercial counter that usually requires a link to their site, you can use a perl script to run a counter. If you are famaliar with using cgi-bin for perl, this would be ideal for you. If you need a script, let me know.

thanks.
I have downloaded one from beseen, as I am not familiar with cgi & I wanted to get my (small) site up & running quickly. the only dissadvantage I can see is that you post a link to beseen on your site ( should that BE a dissadvantage)

I have done a search on cgi & will have to put some effort into learning it in the future, whilst I reconstruct my 'main' site.
