Umm, generally one of the feature's of IE is that it uses the address field as a search engine, MSN usually if you don't give it a specific URL, IE 5.0 and above has what they refer to as " smart search " where it will supposedly take you to the most revelant site it finds based on your query, example: type microsoft in the address bar, it'll take you straight to the MS site.

You can customize the search feature in IE to go to just about anywhere you want; or you can download Googles own toolbar to add ( highly recommend! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif ), where you can type in, or right click on a phrase and google will give you it's relevant hits. It's my personal fav. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hey, iisbob, we are on the same page on this one...In my IE it does work the way it is advertised.... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif (MB...sorry for that but it is a reference to a previous thread)

And any way what iisbosb said is right...the on/off part of the search function can be controlled form Internet Options -> Advanced

Yep, it's been a feature since at least IE 4, put a question mark (?), a space and your keyword(s) and it will act as a search. You can also set it to use different search engines, either in the Advanced Tools menu, or by clicking the Search icon and then the Customize button.

Example: ? photography

Will run a search for webpages containing the word photography, using the default search engine.

Windows Explorer (win98) will also act as a web browser, and maybe a search engine, type a URL into the address bar, and it will go to the webpage, without opening IE. I'm not sure about the search, will have to try that one, but I've used Windows Explorer to surf the web before.
