Is there a simple way to figure out what kind of
ram a computer has? (sdram?? etc)

Go to the link provided below. Download and install Sandra. Once it's installed, start it up and check under the Mainboard listing. Somewhere on that page, it will tell you what is already installed in your computer and what it supports.
