Well, off/on for years we would occationally discover files/folders missing from our network or moved elsewhere.

I saw it - a coworker walked into his cube with some papers and small binders, plopped them down on his desk, and began working away on his PC.

I saw what happened. His binder landed on his mouse, pressed the left button, the mouse moved an inch or so, and then the binder was moved, releasing the mouse key.

I also saw the resulting dialog box on the screen, and the worker readily cancel whatever was going on, dismissing what had obviously just happened.

I spent about 10 minutes explaining it. He just moved a network folder, partially since he cancelled the operatoin, to some other location.

Once I find which folder and where it went, would it work just to drag it back on top of where it is/was? I know that if I do that, I'll be prompted that the folder already exists and do I want to replace it. Well, the answer is no, I want to merge the contents back into one.

In Linux, the way it works when you overwrite an existing folder, it does merge the new/old...it also gives you the option to say yes to all or yes on each individual file, in the folder. Windows should behave similarly...
