Hi I am wondering is it possible for computers to be barred access to different servers if so how is it done, my kids use my machine when i'm at work (the machine is for the home really)I have been told each computer on line has its own number is this right ? or is the the phone line (the number) the thing that is the identifier.

Your computer gets a "unique" IP address every time you log on to the internet if you have a "Dial-up" type connection and that address has NOTHING to do with your phone number.

Hi Randy_tx you said "Your computer gets a "unique" [but different] IP address every time you log on to the internet if you have a "Dial-up" type connection and that address has NOTHING to do with your phone number."
if this is so, how can sites bar you from returning posts, to their
servers, my kids use my machine why I'm at work and a forum I have used for month's now, is doing this to me. I have had messages with reply's saying something like we have tracked your computers address and you cannot post here, I dont know the exact wording because it only came up once, I'm confused.
Somehow the kids have been on this site when I was out, and now the server has noted a number from my machine somehow "what number I don't know" it seems strange why these sites would be interested in numbers from my machine. I am also concerned that this so called number can probably identify me. Somebody must be tracking my machine somehow!

It is called cookies...you get one when you log into the site, your user name and password...there are also other (other than IP address) numbers on your machine tha can be used to identify it. I would also consider some strict discipline for the offending youngsters and some way of restricting their access to the machine (like take the power cord with you...no power no access).

I strongly agree. Take the power cable, lock the room, remove the keyboard and lock it up somewhere, or get a good password utility. If the kids are causing trouble on the Internet, it can possibly escalate to the point someone complains to your ISP and your account can get disabled.
Example: On IRC about 3 years ago, a kid was looking up anyone that showed a local ISP by running a whois command. Then he would send them private messages telling them he was sitting outside watching their house, etc. A simple whois found out enough info to get me in touch with his ISP, same one as mine, I got on the phone with tech support and last I heard they had found out who it was and assured me his parents' account would no longer be accessible. Soon as I emailed them a copy of several death/burglary/torture threats, they got REAL serious...he went offline while he was begging me NOT to call the police..."But it was all just a joke"...Yeah right...

Hi Paleo Pete My concerns are now that somebody from another server can block me posting on their forum how?
when my computer in logged to their server they seem to be able to know that I am posting to them but not allowing this, if the kids hadn't done this I would of thought it to be pritty safe, but no, somebody has a link to my machine whats to stop them passing this on to other uncoothed sites.

Hi mjc I am more concerned for the safety of the kids, there've said they havn't done any wrong and I believe them. I dont like the thought of somebody being able to track/block, call it what you want my machine why I am at work I have told my partner the kids are safe but are they,? if this hadn't come about, I would of been unaware my machine could be traced via ISP or home address "where is it safe".
