The recycle bin icon on my desktop frequently shows 'full' on the desktop, but when I open the window it shows '0' files. however 'empty recycle bin' is active.
After emptying it (even though there are '0' files) it still shows 'full' on the desktop.
Now if I create something (like a shortcut, or copy a file) & then delete it (only 1 item) & open the window again it shows several files (2 or more) which are not shown in the window, only the one that I just deleted.
If I now empty the recycle bin, it empties & the icon on the desktop shows empty as well. but it only does it if you delete something first, otherwise the 'rubbish' remains.
I have found the same thing on 3 comps that I use.

what is this mysterious, invisible rubbish, lurking in the bin?

VIC,
I have noticed something similar to that before.......
Never really paid it much attention, prolly just one of the 600 billion known bugs etc etc etc heh

Doesnt seem to cause any trouble, more just an annoying detail.....thats about it.......

I have no idea how to fix or even if it can be......

What I meant by what I said is hopefully less confusing then the contemplation of the question that led to the confusion in the 1st place.......

My system does the exact same thing sometimes...my thought is pretty much the same as Aware's...since it isn't causing any other problems, I'm not going to worry about it...

And I'm running 2000, what OS are you using?

I do not know the answer to your question, but I have discovered that the recycle bin is more complex than you might imagine.

I have explored it with Ztree(a File Management Utility).

When it is "empty," Ztree shows it as containing a Desktop.ini file.

When it is not empty, it has a Control file named INFO2, Desktop.ini, and the deleted files with filenames like DCO, DC1, DC2, et cetera. The deleted files do not have the names shown by Windows. The INFO2 and Desktop.ini files are not shown by Explorer, even if you tell it to display hidden files.

There is a lot of tricky logic associated with the Recycle bin.

Perhaps you should use File Checker to see if some system files are corrupt.

both home & work PC's have w98.

I,m not really concerned about this, just puzzled & curious, & as you say it's an annoyance at times. I usually like to leave the machine clear & seeing the 'pile' in the bin, click on it to see what I've left behind & there's nothing there. I usually pick a desktop shortcut to copy & delete, then empty the bin & it clears.

it's one of those things that we feel we can comfortably ignore, but every now & again curiousity get's the better of us & we demand an answer.
