All,

I've decided it's time to look at purchasing a replacement for my venerable Linksys WRT54G V.4. I had thought originally of purchasing the Netgear WNDR3700, but I believe the company is having a horrible time with lots of failures - even on the supposed revised versions. On that basis, it's definitely out of contention. Here are some of the criteria I would consider for the purchase:

Gigabit Ethernet ports
Wireless-N model
WPA2 encryption, at minimum

I don't particularly care about any NAS capabilities at this juncture, although it would be an added bonus if any recommendations have that feature. So, if anyone has any recommendations, I'd be glad to see them. I would be looking to spend up to $160 US, but I'd certainly look at going beyond that by a few bucks if the price was warranted.

Thanks in advance :)

Upper end Netgear models would be my first recommendation for N routers for home use.
Followed by Linksys E4200 but above that price point.

For heavier duty at a heavier price those from Zyxel would be the choice.

I suggest you try an Encore router. I am so sick of re-booting my Linksys router. When my daughter got an off campus apartment I picked up an Encore Wireless N router (http://www.pctechnologiesusa.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=197)for around $30.00. It has been up and running since August without a re-start or reset. It has enough range to reach the first floor from the third floor in a 3 story house. I don't think I'll go back to the majors again.

I have been using the budget T-Link routers and other wifi peripherals (http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=tlink+routers&x=0&y=0) for the past four years without any issues to date.

I should have said TP-Link (http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=tp-link+routers&x=16&y=14).

Thank you very much for your suggestions, gents. I'll have a look through these various options and then figure out the best choice for me :)

PrntRhd,

Much obliged. I had a cursory look at that site a couple of nights ago, but the page you referenced is great for its overall succinctness and the ability to dig into the weeds. I hadn't realised before that Asus manufactured routers, but that looks like a distinct possibility for me.
