Open/Close Ports

I had a friend that I convinced to upgrade from Win95 to 98. Everything went great until he called me a little bit ago and said that the game he plays has to connect to ports 6002 and 6004. So my question is--How does he open them and how does he close them when he's done?

The program he's using will open the internet connection or socket to the other computer. When he closes or exits the program the socket will be torn down. If he has a firewall he can prevent the computer from using a certain port. If that's the case the firewall will have an administrative interface that controls the building of it's rules.
