I've done it again.
I was cleaning up a Laptop HD, and have obviously removed something I shud
not have.
After I finished, the message showed "restart etc". When I restarted I now get the statement "invalid system disc."
Fortunately, I have 2 HD's for this laptop, however the one with all my
files is the one I mucked up.
Is there a way I can recover?
I have it in my mind to take a command off this good HD, copy to a floppy
and re-install it on the mucked up HD. Of course unless I can get a boot
with the mucked HD installed, I can,t do anything.
Have I hung myself?

I do not have a copy of WIN98.
Both HD's have WIN98 installed on them however, albeit one version has a
different version number.
Help please!

The problem is commonly caused by missing system files, but there can be other causes. This Microsoft link (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q128/7/30.ASP) tells how to restore the system files and describes other possible problems.

try find fast undelete, free demo available here [http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Utilities/File_Maintenance_and_Repair_Utilities/Fast_File_Undelete.html] it will undelete all your files providing they have not been overwritten. If you're not sure which to restore, then try restoring them all, do a backup, then do your clean up again.

suggest you load the prog onto a floppy & run it from there. Good Luck!

Thank You. I downloaded the program to a floppy.
I must tell you, I had a brainy, as to using a startup disc from my desktop
but was concerned, as to different version numbers. PPete thought it may be
safe to use it, so I did. It restored files from a newer version number
of 98SE, but it was enuff to get a boot and do a SYS C: All is well on my
laptop now. I also came upon another HD from a local fixit shop, albeit a
lesser capacity, that I could have used to get a boot file off of. I did
learn that W/98SE changes, updates, or what ever they call it, from year to
year. The 98SE in my desktop bought in Nov 2000, is different in files, for
98SE from 1998 and different again from 1999.
Kinda like that download site you gave me, lots of stuff there to peruse.
Again, Thanks.
