setup Minecraft Server

Jiggy and I are trying to setup a server to play MC. We are having trouble doing it. I don't seem to understand about the IP addresses. My IP address is internal, I think assigned by my router. When I go to forward a port on my router which IP address do I use? The external one I can find on whatsmyip.com or the one my router is assigning me.
I'm really confused with this. We have been watching vids on youtube some to learn but nothing is explaining this.
Any one have any ideas or knowledge about setting up servers for something like this?

I too would like to figure out how to set-up a minecraft server... my understanding though is that you need to have the external ip address... google ip is the easiest way for you to get what it really is. that's about as far as I can go...

only problem with minecraft multiplayer is that it requires you to trust the people you invite to your server as it is the IP address you have for your computer. People can connect to your computer and get stuff from it with the address (the rest of what they need can be gotten easily...) I may seem paranoid about it, but it is still something that you need to take into account.

hiya awaj, another Minecrafter! This is great! Be nice to set up a server for PCG people to play on.
Like jiggy said we are trying and reading and reading and trying. I've gotten far enough to forward ports in my router and they seem to be open. I can load up the server and it starts. BTW Jiggy I got my single player world loaded into the server and it comes up!!:D One of the requirements of that is that you have to have never been to the Nether before and I haven't. To chicken of course as you know! Also lots of others are having problems as well, seems the server code is very very buggy so we will just have to keep trying, maybe Notch will come out with some fixes for the server side of the game.
awaj if you figure a way to setup a server please let jiggy and I know, and if anyone has any tips or clues how to do this we could sure use the help. If we figure anything out we will let you know as well. We have our external IP's and I have forwarded the MC port and made exceptions in my firewall but so far jiggy can't connect yet.

Could one of the mods take that out for me please, don't want to cause any one any trouble!

Just saw you last post awaj yep we know that. But if you go into server properties I think it is you can limit the amount of people who can be on your server at once. As well as they have to be let on in the first place. Like right now I have the amount of people that can be on mine set to 2, me and jiggy. I'm so new at this that I'm really just guessing but common sense says that would limit it. As well I don't keep it running, when jiggy and I want to play I'll start it up so that should be ok and I trust jiggy implicitly.

I'm not just talking about the game though. I'm talking about your actual computer. the way every computer is connected through the internet, the IP address is one thing you want to hold onto tightly and not give it out to just anybody. like one website I go to tracks IP addresses to make sure someone isn't using multiple accounts, but that's the extent

Hi all,
Sorry to be so long getting back had some issues here.
Jiggy and I finally got a server up and going yesterday. Followed Paulsoraesjr youtube vid on it and it worked like a charm.
George you are too cool, I may just do that, Jiggy would probably like to come too, can your computer handle that? Mine is no gaming machine, glitches galore but we have been having some fun for sure.
Found Lapis and Diamond on one of our first forays! :cool:
I'm more of a miner and Jiggy is a tremendous builder! I'm also a sissy and play on peaceful with my own world. I enabled mob's on the server and told Jiggy I expected to be protected!! I'll just run screaming and hide behind him anyway! :D:D:D
awaj, thank you for caring enough to be concerned, really I do know how dangerous it can be to open up a computer like this and you are so right, I'll hang on that IP for dear life.:) I have a VPN now as well and I'm thinking of trying a connection with that too, just a two person account so that would work for Jiggy and I at least. Don't know if it will work but nothing hurt by trying;)
