I just read in zdnet the the FBI's surveillence software can look at any internet traffic such as emails ad file transfers although they originally denied that it could. Although I'm sure that they wouldn't care about 99.9% of the internet traffic, what does everyone think about this? They could take any information from individual people to large corporations. Is this going to affect the way that anyone uses the internet? And not to feed into a conspiracy theory, but is it possible that they can search any computer connected to the net automatically through filters for certain words. I found this at http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/news/0,4586,2655658,00.html?chkpt=zdhpnews01.
I'm just curious.

I'm not surprised at all. I'm convinced the FBI and CIA have had the ability to look into almost anything they want to for years. They have had a program searching the net for certain keywords for a long time, in an effort to track down militant groups, high volume drug traffickers, etc.
I doubt if they are interested in the everyday emails and such of the average person, the sheer volume of information to be sorted through would be formidable, if not impossible.
I wouldn't think it should be a major concern for 99.9% of the population, but it does have a certain amount of worry value...

I too am not suprised. I haven't read the article but it implies that they intercept packets from EVERY node on the internet? This seems hard to conceptualize. Of course real time queries quild be IMPOSSIBLE,so that would mean a completely unfiltered loging of EVERY packet from EVERY server. That would be without a DOUBT the-largest-database-in-the-world. I dont think a 6 Gig harddrive would suffice and something tells me the query process time would take a little longer than it takes to compile linux on a 386! No there is no way threy could pull that off. All this means is that WHEN they decide you are of interest to them, use someone elses account(spoof!). Hehe. Later...

Hey dont worry people, open a dos prompt and type "netstat 1".
This will show all IP activity around your computer. If you use programs like icq, napster or powow, the list will be as long as your arm. The will update themselves on the screen at regular intervals.
The sun doesnt shine out of the FBI. **** them m8.
Our british police force would be just as good if we had a shoddy crime rate like the US http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
The FBI cannot access 10billion megabits of data every second.
Illegal sites are all over the place, funny how the FBI have done sod all about that.....
Also, the fbi have no rights in other countries.
There are programs that will protect your pc and display any FBI twat (or other person) who is taking a peek inside your PC.
I was going to say a lot more about the smart way of revealing hackers on the top of the reply, but after I copied it, I accidentally copied my password over it so the clipboard was emptied! Oh well, I've made my MAIN point anyways.

OK, I tried the Netstat 1 command, watched the info scroll by for 5 min. Each parragaph exactly the same. The best I can figure, it was saying i was accessing my account with AOL. What does all this mean?

Tried it and loved it http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif. Where can i find more info on using this syntaxis or more of those for that matter. Commands for testing com, lpt ports, etc. would be appreciated.
Oh i just noticed that just typing netstat gives you one paragraph and returns you to the prompt
Thanx

Wonder how I missed bobman's post a month ago? Anyway, I removed the unacceptable language, and would appreciate seeing no more of that...
netstat_/? with a space in place of the underscore ( _ ) will give you the switches and syntax available for the command. It's no secret command, I've used it for about 4 years. Check through any DOS books or A+ material you may have, it's probably in there somewhere. It's most useful for monitoring local network activity.
Type help at a DOS prompt and browse through the list, you might be surprised at the variety of commands available to DOS. With the above mentioned netstat command you're using the interval switch, the interval being 1 second. [Ctrl] + [C] will stop the action at any time, rather than sitting there watching it scroll for 5 minutes or so.

Unacceptable language? Not really I just hate the way u yanks always say nice little things about the FBI thats all http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
Anyway, Netstat contains the sort of "language" most people wouldn't ever understand, its a slightly complex program. so all you need to know is that if any foreign addresses appear that u haven't seen before, then you could be being watched if not accessed. If its so unsecret then why does hardly anyone know it then? Because very few people are sad enough to read through ALL of the avaible commands for the dos prompt. Most of them are probably useless anyway.

Yes, unacceptable language. Since you obviously either failed to read it or ignored it, here's part of the Acceptible Use Policy you had to agree to to register your user name and participate in these forums.
[quote]You agree, through your use of the Forums, that you will not use the Forums to post any material which is knowingly false and/or defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, or otherwise violate any laws. You further agree not to impersonate any person or entity, forge headers or otherwise manipulate identifiers in order to disguise the origin of any posting, or collect or store personal data about other users.[/b]
The portion of your post I deleted was the kind of profanity that is not appreciated or accepted here. Please do not use that kind of language again.
