How do I . . . get rid of some of the icons in the system tray? Some are duplicates (left and right-hand side) and some refer to apps I never use.

Hi Pianorak,

The icons on the left are just shortcuts to the programs .exe file. These programs are not running in the background. You can just right click on them and then click delete. They are stored in C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch.

The ones on the right are running in the background and are started every time you boot-up your computer. To stop them running on boot-up click on Start\Run, type in msconfig and click OK click the Startup tag and de-select the programs you don't want to run. Then re-boot.

Oh! Some of them have to remain selected like systemtray but I'm not sure what else.

Hope this helps http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Ahh! How I long to be an Adept http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

If I just kept clicking on the Submit Reply button I could be a Grand Master Geek in 2 days, 4 hours, 37 minutes and 18 seconds (Approximately) http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hi GeeBee Brilliant! In other words, just by thanking all and sundry who are answering my questions I can "bump up" my points towards Grand Master Geek. Horray, no need to spend years studying for A+ exam. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
But seriously, I think I'll invest in a book first and look at the range of free online tutorials available before taking the plunge and enrol in a "proper" course.
