i was cleaning my house earlier and found my old Palm VIIx PDA ad the HotSync connector that comes with it (and yes, it's a serial connector :D)
the darn thing is so old i can't find a use for it anymore, but just as i was about to give up hope on it i learned that you can access the internet via Serial connection to your computer.
Problem is, using the completely obsolete ProxiWeb and PalmScape browsers, i need to set up a proxy and don't know how...
If you guys could help i'd view this thread and the PC Guide forum on my palm, i'll include screenshots!

This is the most bloody awesome proxy program you can think of:
http://www.proxyplus.cz/
I'm using it as well - highly configurable and very secure. Actually my entire home network connects to the internet not through a router, but through numerous NICs installed in my main computer and this proxy.

Kiosk, how would i use that in the program? i have to assign a proxy host, and i don't know how. i have internet going to the Palm via Serial port, but i don't know how to correctly assign what i need to do. i'll post examples.
here you can see i'm trying to assign a custom proxy (this one happens to be for bolt browser) into the settings, i don't know what to put in where it says "Host" and what to put in under "port"

after trying those settings, and all i've tried after, this is what i get when trying to load a webpage.

123456, i've been great! still toying around with computers. yourself?

I'm going to assume that you're using windows XP and "Direct Cable Connection" utility for serial linking.
First you need to assign a static, local IP address for the main computer which is connected to the internet. Select a network connection which connects you to the internet, and assign the following IP address to it: 192.168.1.1, subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0.
Next, open your internet browser and connect to the Proxy+ program (by typing its IP address in the address bar, you can find it in the readme file), and assign the proxy port to something else than 80 or 8080. I'm using port 700 (for no particular reason, I sort of like number 700). :) While you're in the Proxy+, under "secure addresses", insert 192.168.1.1-192.168.255.255 to the list of secure addresses, and tick "use secure addresses". This will prevent random strangers from the internet from using your computer as a zombie/proxy. Check out other options, disable e-mail server functionality, etc.
Next stop is the firewall. I don't know what kind of program you're using, but it should allow incoming connections to Proxy+ ONLY to port 700, and ONLY from the IP address 192.168.1.2, and no other addresses/ports. Outgoing connections from the proxy to other addresses should have no limitations.
After this, you're mostly done on the computer side.
Now, on your palm, assign a local IP address to it; it should be 192.168.1.2. Outgoing connections go to 192.168.1.1:700.
Connect the serial cable and fire up the DCC, and try to ping the palm from the computer and vice-versa. Ping should go through both ways if everything is working smoothly. If it doesn't, try to disable and then re-enable your network adapter on the computer.
Keep in mind that I'm pulling all of this out of my ass, it's been a year since the last time I had to rebuild my home network and over 5 years since I last did it with serial cables. Feel free to ask/complain/ridicule me if I got something wrong or simply forgot to add. :)
edit: I actually connected a 286 to the broadband internet this way, so it's gotta work somehow - but it's been such a long time since I last did it that most of the fine tidbits fizzled out of my memory. :)

Okay so here's the lowdown on what's going on with my Palm.
Kiosk, only parts of what you said made sense. I installed the Proxy+ program and i set up my proxy, secured the said numbers you've listed, and then opened a custom port. (4480)
Then, i turned off Windows Firewall (it's never asked about any inbound connections before, so I just turned the piece of junk off completely for a short time while trying to connect)
Afterwards, it still said it can't connect, and what would i put in the Proxy Server box under the browser configuration on the palm? i have the port now, just no server :p
Then! I don't know how to ping my palm, and there's no way for me to assign it an IP address (on the palm). The Palm has no settings for me to change that, all it has is a box that says "Detect IP Address" which i have checked. I don't know how to assign it an IP address nor ping it, so here's where i'm stuck :(
123456, I've just installed AIM (5.9 of course :D) just to catch back up, I'll sign in every now and then and we can chat.

Server should be 192.168.1.1. Also, I've never even seen a palm, much less worked with one, so I'm telling you how you'd theoretically connect two PCs with serial cables (assuming the palm behaves as a PC).
About PING, on your computer, click start/run and type in "cmd"; this will open up a command interpreter. When the palm and the computer are connected together, type "ping 192.168.1.2" and see if you get any responses from the palm.
I'm sorry, but I can't tell you much more than this; having never worked with a palm before - someone else who actually did it could offer you much better advice than me. :(

Ah, I see, that seems like it should work, I'll have to give it a run later. Thank you! i'll post back with the results.
