View Full Version : Connection tests 100%, but still won't connect...

Extremely odd problem, and I can't work out why this won't work.

- Network connection from a master switch, about 85 meters long.
- Connection tests 100% perfect using the network cable tester
- No network device can see the connection, even though it IS there, and has tested as perfect

I tried putting a small 5-port switch in series with the connection, thinking that we might be getting a bit close to the maximum of 100 meters between master switch and device as per the spec, but this did not fix the problem either.

Another device further down the hall, which also comes back to the same connection point works - very odd indeed.

This one has me stumped - anyone got any ideas?
It tests perfect end to end, and should work, but doesn't... :(

I am sure you tried switching port with the one working.I don't know what type of cable tester you are using? Is it a simple DC continuity test (end to end) or a ping type connection? If using DC then your problem is either interference from lights or txformer, sometime skin wire from pulling, etc. I have install many cabling in ceiling and most had to be in docking for that distance. But for a long run, you're right, it is sometime very odd.

Simple DC tester.

I have a possible theroy - I fed the network cable down a hole in the wall with some other cables in it - perhaps there is some coupling going on there, and this is upsetting the mix - I will move the wire to another hole along from the one it is in now, and see if that helps us...
