AT&T ANSWERING unit disables internet

I have AT&T DIRECT 6 answering machine.I have Starpower dial up internet.
When answering machine is connected to telephone line. Takes up to 10
tries to connect. Starpower says protocol error or Starpower disabled connection.
No trouble if answer machine not connected to telephone line. Older answer
machines worked.

Looks like your answering machine is the problem. Possibly it is too much for that particular 'circuit'...what is its 'Ringer Equivalency'?
