I'm running WinXP SP3. The problem is in the TCP/IP section of the "Local Area Connection" menu (that is the name of my NIC); when I select an option for the NIC to obtain an IP address automatically, windows returns an error message, saying that the card has limited or no connectivity, and obviously, nothing works.

However, when I manually assign the IP address to my NIC (192.168.1.1 is my favorite), everything works great. I'm apparently doing something wrong. Could someone care to enlighten me as to why is this happening?

Is your router set to do DHCP?

Problem solved! Just like jlreich pointed out, I checked my router's configuration page (IP address 192.168.1.254) and *woah* - DHCP was turned off and the router was set to accept incoming connections only from IP 192.168.1.1.

The router's interface was very cumbersome but I managed to pull it off; after resetting and tinkering with it for half an hour I managed to get the router to accept incoming connections from every IP in the local address pool.

Thanks for assistance. :)
